FEATURED PERSONALITY

Meet Barangay.ph's Featured Personality!
Name: Vicky Garchitorena
Occupation: President, Ayala Foundation Inc., Ayala Foundation-USA
When one thinks of Ayala Foundation Inc. (AFI), the social development arm of the Ayala Group of Companies, one name comes to mind: Vicky Garchitorena, President of Ayala Foundation Inc. Indeed Vicky is the face of AFI and the driving force behind its numerous projects.
Among the most notable projects of AFI under the leadership of Vicky is GILAS. With GILAS (which stands for Gearing up for Internet Literacy and Access for Students)
Vicky dreams of one day connecting 100% of all Philippine public high schools to the Internet. With her vision, her commitment to her work, and her passion for helping her kababayans, this dream might yet come true sooner than expected. Already, about 25% of the public high schools have been connected, a tremendous improvement over the 6% connectivity before GILAS was launched.
The other educational programs that were initiated under her leadership are: CENTEX (for Center of Excellence in Public Elementary School) and Text2Teach. CENTEX brings cutting edge curricula and teaching resources to two schools - one in Tondo and one in Batangas - for the brightest children of the poorest families. TexT2Teach uses current technologies to bring additional resources for teaching Science, Math and English for Grades 5 and 6 in the most under-resourced public elementary schools.
Vicky has held very important positions in government notably as Head of Presidential Management Staff, Secretary to the Cabinet, and Senior Consultant on Poverty Alleviation and Good Governance to the Office of the President of the Philippines. She is Founding Chair of the League of Corporate Foundations, the Philippine Council on NGO Certification, the Metro South Cooperative Bank, and the Makati NGO Network. She is also a Senior Adviser to the World Bank on Corruption in East Asia. She was also a Member of the Board of the Council on Foundations (USA) and the Global Corporate Citizenship Initiative of the World Economic Forum. She was also Co-Chair of the EDSA People Power Commission.
She graduated from the College of the Holy Spirit with B.S. Physics, summa cum laude and took post-graduate courses at the Asian Institute of Management and Harvard University.
She is the mother of five accomplished children and already a grandmother thrice over.
To balance her hectic work pace (she still logs in 12-hour days), she goes ballroom dancing , plays mahjong with siblings and close friends, goes outlet shopping when in the US, and enjoys watching sports events on TV. On weekends, she hies off to her weekend retreat in Lipa, Batangas, where her garden provides her with quiet moments breathing in the fragrance of jasmine and champaca and camia, watching the bamboos sway with the wind, and the butterflies and dragonflies flutter in the sunlight.
